The year 2020 has been challenging for most people. There have been changes of direction for some of you, and perhaps you have seen an opportunity in starting something new. That’s exactly what happened for us here at Northern Flock.

Northern Flock are a mother and daughter team, Eileen and Annaliese Lamb. Eileen is the extremely creative one within the family-run business and has made gifts for family members for many years. She has always wanted to turn her gifts into a business.

Annaliese runs the administration side of the business but still helps out hand-making the products with her mum in the evenings at their home in the pretty village of Higham in Lancashire. Annaliese has recently finished her Masters and works for the Government with a passion to eventually work with them on their Green Initiative. In her spare time, Annaliese focuses on helping her mum grow Northern Flock.

So how did Northern Flock start?

Eileen made gifts for her family which had the name attached ‘Northern Flock,’ this had come from the ‘Lamb family.’ Eileen and her family lived in the North of England and she recalls the Christmas cards sent from her family as a child were signed off ‘ …. and the flock,’ meaning the children. Because of this family tradition, we came up with a quote which is used in our marketing: ‘handmade by lambs,’ which connected the family with our new eco-friendly business.

When the Lockdown started, we became very much aware of the climate changing. We started to order bread and groceries from our local bakery in the village and local milkman who lives just up the hill from our home in the pretty village of Higham in Lancashire. We also wanted to start recycling our plastic and food waste, and to buy gifts for loved ones who are just as eco-friendly as we are.

After much searching and not being able to find what we were looking for, we turned our attention to how we could make eco-friendly products for people who feel the same about the planet as we do.

That’s when Northern Flock was born. Eileen saw the opportunity during the Lockdown to make handmade gifts into a real business working from home. She used the time she had to research ingredients and materials, and perfect the recipes for the gifts that we wanted to sell.

We use ingredients and packaging that care for our world because we need to look after it.

It is important to both of us that the ingredients and materials in all of our products and packaging are carefully sourced to promote and support the care of our world. There was just no point in us making beautiful, handmade eco-friendly gifts to then wrap them in plastic packaging.

So everything from our boxes, bags, labels, tissue paper, and even the aluminium containers for the candles are sustainable. And did you know that aluminium is recyclable? Not many people do!

After plenty of research, Beeswax became the star of the show as the base ingredient for all of the wax products. It’s a natural product and highly sustainable. It can protect you against irritants as well as helping to moisturise and soften your skin. It also has anti-inflammatory benefits and antibacterial properties. So if you have say psoriasis or eczema it can be soothing on your skin.

Many of you reading this may be eco friendly in which case we are sure you will agree that we have to care for our world. Mother Nature has this wonderful, abundant cupboard of ingredients, Beeswax being one of them. The ingredients that Mother Nature provides, naturally manage our skin health, so the addition of synthetic ingredients is not needed.

Beeswax is a sustainable ingredient, so you feel good using it, and you also know it’s not destroying our world.  We think there is nothing nicer than smoothing the hand balm on your hands, then sitting back and lighting one of our handmade Beeswax candles.
