Being mindful about your world.

Mindfulness in nature

Take a moment to breathe and look after yourself. Because if you don’t look after you first, how can you look after our world, save the planet, recycle, care for nature, and care for others?

We live in a busy world and taking time out for yourself can be somewhat challenging. With work, children, the home, and everything else to look after, how can you look after yourself and how does this help save the planet?

Taking time out to breathe helps you make more conscious choices.

Being busy means that you are rushing around when you have little time to yourself. You feel like you just need to get your jobs done at home and work, and because of that, things like recycling and shopping in an eco-friendly way can sometimes get left behind. It can seem to take more effort sorting your re-cycling out, shopping on the organic aisle in your supermarket, and making sure the products and gifts you buy are caring for your world.

When you take a few minutes a day to just breathe, you feel more relaxed and calm and it feels easier to get things done. You feel like you have more time and are more aware to make conscious choices about what you buy. You will make much better choices from a state of feeling calm rather than being rushed, which usually comes from a state of being stressed and overwhelmed.

Did you forget what you did 5 minutes ago?

Did you know that most people walk around forgetting what they did a few minutes ago? It’s not unusual to go upstairs to fetch something then you get to the top step and you forget what you needed. Or you have already switched on the dishwasher, then you go back to it later to press the on button because you forgot you did it earlier.

It’s what we call unconscious behaviour and living in your mind rather than being present. Maybe you go for a nice walk and when you look back you wonder how you got so far already?

To combat the short term forgetfulness, slow down and breathe. When you go for a walk, become more aware of your surroundings. Feel the air on your face, look up to the sky, and take note of the trees and nature that surround you. Suddenly you become more appreciative and grateful of the world you live in. And because of that, you want to look after it more because you want to encapsulate the beautiful feelings you have of being outside again and again. The trees blowing and the birds singing make you feel good for simply being alive, so you naturally want to protect them.

How does mindfulness help the planet?

Have you noticed that nature and animals never get stressed except when they are interfered with by humans? Take a moment to look outside and maybe see a bird sitting on a tree, or a hedgehog (if you’re lucky,) just ambling around in some leaves. When left to their own devices animals take things slowly. They know how to just sit and watch the world go by. But as soon as humans walk past or get near, the animals are gone. Their fight or flight system kicks in because they perceive danger, so they disappear quickly.

We are no different. When we perceive threats we run and hide. If it’s one more job to do which already adds to a long list we go into overwhelm. Taking time out and relaxing has a knock-on effect on nature. As we feel calm so does everything else around us. So if you want to be kind to yourself and the planet, taking time out and just sitting or walking in nature is one of the best things you can do. Being in nature helps your overall wellbeing because it helps reduce your blood pressure and stress levels. You feel at peace because nature is showing you how life should be when you slow down.
